Oriole Instructor Terry Herman is offering one-hour privates and semi-privates running from 9:00-4:00 pm on most Mondays and Wednesdays. Prerequisite: dogs must be competent on all agility equipment.

Money will be collected the day of the lesson.  Discounts for current Oriole agility instructors. Oriole Lifetime Members must pay fees.

As with all Oriole classes, all class fees go to the club.

Introductory Agility Workshop &Evaluation for Foundations on Sunday, November 12, 6-8pm

Curious about training your dog for agility? Want to know how to begin?

Given the high level of interest in Introductory Agility classes, Oriole Dog Training Club is offering Intro to Agility. Join us for this free workshop!

Oriole’s curriculum is designed to ensure that each training team is given the best chance to succeed in pursuit of their goals. To ensure this happens, we believe that all teams should have a firm grasp on basic training concepts and address any potential issues prior to beginning an agility journey. We believe agility excellence is a marathon, not a sprint!

To that end, a prerequisite for Foundation to Dog Sports (the first step in our agility journey) will be 1) successful completion of Basic Obedience OR 2) CGC title OR 3) successful evaluation of your dog at Intro to Agility Night (registration details below).

Proof of successful completion of any of these three prerequisite(s) must be provided at the time of the Winter Session registration. *NOTE—Successful evaluation at the Intro to Agility evening DOES NOT GUARANTEE a spot in upcoming session. Everyone must follow the registration protocol to sign up for upcoming classes.

During the Intro to Agility workshop, which is free to attend, we will cover:

• Information on ODTC

• An overview of what skills a dog needs to successfully participate in an agility class

• Different Agility organizations for which ODTC offers trials

• Agility Rules

• A demonstration of Agility

• Discussion of supplemental agility resources (Online, Books, Videos)

• Home Training Equipment

• Evaluation of dogs for placement into Foundations of Dog Sports (Max of 10).

*NOTE—Successful evaluation at the Intro to Agility evening DOES NOT GUARANTEE a spot in upcoming session but will satisfy the requirement to sign up for any future Foundations class.

Again, there is no fee to attend. But we request you register in advance

Who Should Come?

• Anyone curious about doing agility at ODTC is welcome to come and audit (leave your dog at home).

Agility Seminars with Rebecca Thrift on Nov 25-26, 2023

Oriole is hosting 4 seminars presented by Rebecca Thrift.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2023– 8 working slots per seminar, limited auditors

9:00 am-12:30 pm • Commitment Issues? Your Dog, Not You!

Running agility is not as easy as people think and learning to trust your training is vital to success! Today’s courses require the ability to send your dog to an obstacle and move to the next one. This, however, is not a natural behavior for our dogs, so we must work hard to train this skill! This seminar will focus on jumps and tunnel commitment with competing handler motion!  We will work on the first basic training steps to teach opposing motion to young and beginner dogs with exercises and drills.  Also, emphasis will be on sending your dogs ahead of you down a line of jumps, and basic drills to start your training for a dog that drives ahead of you.  Jumps and tunnels only.  Suitable for young dogs, novice dogs and open dogs that may not have started training yet on how to teach their dogs what we want with opposing motion.

1:30 pm-5:00 pm  Lines Not Obstacles

The OneMind Dogs method doesn’t focus on obstacles! Actually, it’s the opposite – you focus on handling your dog on running lines, rather than running from one obstacle to another. This helps your dog to move through an agility course more easily as you help anticipate what’s coming next. Learn everything about this concept and how to incorporate it within your team for more clear rounds and improved overall communication. This seminar will be for dogs that are currently competing. It will have Novice, Open and Masters type challenges.  We can break down the challenges for each level so that the concept of seeing lines on courses, rather than individual obstacles can be comprehended and implemented when walking courses. Jumps, tunnels and contacts will be seen on these courses.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2023 – 8 working slots per seminar, limited auditors

9:00 am-12:30 pm • LET’S WORK WEAVES!

Novice and Open level work. Let’s work entrances, footwork, speed, independence. Channel weaves and wires can be used.  Open to young dogs, and novice level dogs.  Jumps, tunnels and weaves only.

1:30 pm-5:00 pm • Independent Weave Work

Difficult entrances, Sends from a distance, layering obstacles into a difficult weave entrance.  Rear cross entrances, send to the other end of the weaves.  Jumps, Weaves, tunnels and possibly contacts.  Open and Advanced level teams.  This level will not use wires or channel weaves.

Registration opens Monday, October 23, 2023 at 8 am for Oriole members and Wednesday, October 25, at 8 am for non-members.

More information and registration links can be found on our Seminars and Workshops page.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2023 – 8 working slots per seminar, limited auditors

8:30 am-12:00 pm • Back to Basics
Not quite sure when to front and when to blind? Do Blinds seem scary at times? Maybe you’ve been told you’re late with your crosses sometimes? Spend a morning perfecting your Front and Blind Crosses – when, where and how to execute a perfect cross! Suitable for teams at all levels.  Jumps and tunnels only.

1:00 pm-4:30 pm • All Things Tunnel

Does your dog love tunnels? Maybe a little too much :)? This workshop will delve into all things tunnel – from turns out of tunnels, tunnel discriminations to bypassing tunnels and much more!  Suitable for teams at all levels.  Jumps and tunnels only.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2023 – 8 working slots per seminar, limited auditors

8:30 am-12:00 pm • Drills for Fancy Skills
We’ll be breaking down ‘fancy skills’ such as threadles, bypasses, backsides, etc., and work the mechanics and timing of each skill. If you’re intrigued by ISC/Premier or want to fine tune skills for difficult courses then this workshop is for you. Suitable for dogs sequencing jumps, tunnels and weaves.

1:00 pm-4:30 pm • Step Up Your Game

We’ll be running courses with challenges often set by a couple of judges at the highest-level competitions. Dogs should be proficient on all obstacles. We will work on some tricky challenges but we can always break things down as needed to show you where and when you should apply your commands and show your dog what you want.  This seminar may use all obstacles.

Agility Distance Seminars with Debi Hutchinson – Saturday September 30, 2023

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2023– 8 working slots per seminar, limited auditors

8am-12:00pm • Novice/Open Distance and Layering

Come learn how and where to apply pressure to your dog’s line so that you can keep him/her out on a line away from you and get them to take the obstacles in front of them rather than having them turn into you avoiding what’s directly on their path. Learn how to deal with the tunnel/A-Frame discrimination. How to get them to get out on a line when you are layering a jump or an A-Frame. Start teaching them to work 15-20 feet away from you rather than running at your side. Jumps, tunnels, and contact equipment only. No weaves or teeters.

12:30pm-4:30 pm • Elite/Masters Distance and Layering

Learn how to keep your dog on an outside line while you layer jumps or obstacles in between you. Learn how to send your dog away from you. Where and when to apply pressure on a line to keep them moving forward and not turning into you and driving ahead. Learn how to layer an A-Frame even though you are sending your dog to a jump or the weaves on the other side of the obstacle. You don’t have to outrun your dog if you can work them on a line parallel to you. Come see how and where to apply your pressure so you don’t have to run every step of the course with them. Teach them to work 20, 30, even 40 feet away from you. Jumps, tunnels, contact equipment, and weaves.
