Over the break between semesters, we’ve been busy getting things cleaned up and ready for next month’s classes and trials.
We do like the “kitty litter” surface used for our December AKC agility trial, but there is no denying it does leave all of our agility trial equipment pretty dusty. And with the unusual summer/fall like weather we’ve been having after Christmas this year, it was a good time to do some ‘spring’ cleaning. Thank you to those club members who were able to come at short notice this past weekend to take advantage of the nice weather to get the cleaning done.
Everything comes out of the POD (which itself got a thorough mopping and cleaning) to be dusted and/or rinsed.
Laying it out to dry.
The cleaned up tunnels evoke a bizarre obstacle course. The next step in agility course design?
All the gating gets dusted off.
All jumps and jump parts dusted and drying off.
On a different cleaning front, we’re very excited to have received our new TurfSoft TS3 machine for cleaning the sports field. It’s been a little over a year since the sports field was installed and it was time for a thorough cleaning. We’re pleased that the machine will give us a chance to do that on a more regular basis now.
Shipped all the way from Germany to our loading dock
Uncrated for the first time, Richard, Russ, Melvin, and Janet study the features of the TurfSoft
Russ takes the TurfSoft for a spin.
Richard and Janet return a few days later and clean the entire sportsfield. Here’s the obedience side all newly cleaned and fluffed.
Hair Be Gone ! The machine brushes up the rubber from the turf and uses vibrating sieves to separate out things like dog hair before releasing the rubber to be brushed back into the turf.

Trial Chairman Linda Grskovich catches us up on the happenings at this trial:
“Oriole Dog Training Club held its second NACSW sanctioned nose work trial event on December 11, 12 and 13, 2015 at Camp Tockwough in Worton, Maryland. For December, the weather was amazingly warm at times hitting the mid-60s. We had fog in the morning, which helped by leaving a nice layer of moisture for the exterior searches. The rest of the day was beautiful. The Certifying Official was Troy Mills from Colorado, who enjoyed our great weather. Our judges were Michelle Goodman, Christina McCauley and Mark Carr, all from Maryland. The volunteers were awesome. Many thanks to the nose work community and friends who volunteered and supported the Oriole event. Thank you to Don Grskovich who organized the volunteer effort and flow so each day ended ahead of schedule! The weekend resulted in 17 NW3 titles, 3 NW3 elite titles, 28 NW3 Element titles and 15 NW2 titles. For all results, please check the NACSW web page http://www.nacsw.net/trial-results/trial/2476
It is also nice to say that all of the Oriole members who competed came home in ribbons. Donna Sapp and her Border Terrier Colin earned a NW3 and NW3 elite. Colin became the third Border Terrier in NACSW to win a NW3 Elite title doing so on his 12th Birthday! Hazel Troendle and her Border Collie, Fiber got their NW3. Carol Jennings and Stella competed in NW2 on Saturday and went home with a 3rd place overall ribbon in the Interior search element.”
Here are some pictures and videos from the event. Videos are courtesy of Karen McMillan of Fido Photography.
This first video shows Donna Sapp and her Border Terrier Colin conducting their NW3 container search.
The second video shows Hazel Troendle and her Border Collie, Fiber conducting their NW3 vehicle search.
A class for AED/CPR certification will be held at Oriole on January, 16th, 2016 at 10:00am prior to the Annual Awards meeting.
The class is free of charge for members who are currently teaching or enrolled in a class and who are 18 years or older. This will be the only class offered in 2016 and we would like for as many members as possible to be knowledgeable about these life-saving techniques in the event of an emergency. Participants will be certified by the American Heart Association for two years. Those who previously took the class in 2013 or 2014 will need to register in order to renew their standing.
Entries close at 5pm on Monday, February 22 or when the limit of 400 runs per day is reached. If the trial does not fill, DAY OF SHOW ENTRIES may be taken.
A couple of the days went a bit long (our trial secretary has some ideas about improving that for next year), but good footing, good temperatures, good judges and fun courses went a long way too at this weekend’s Oriole Dog Training Club AKC Agility trial at the Shipley Arena in Westminster, MD.
Reporter Jacob DeNobel of the Carroll County Times had thisto say about the trial:

“Oriole held its first NACSW sanctioned Odor Recognition Test (ORT) at our new facility this past weekend. We conducted 96 tests. The passing rate was Birch 81%, Anise 73%, and Clove 62% .
Cindy Knowlton CNWItm (See Spot Grin) was the Supervising Certifying Official/Judge and Donald Grskovich CNWItm was in training as a Certifying Official. Our volunteers were awesome once again!!! We started the day a bit behind schedule as registration took longer than we thought, but the day ended 1 hour ahead of schedule. WOO HOO… nobody complains about getting out early!!
With the new facility, we had to test our flow, indoor and outdoor staging of dogs and handlers. Our biggest oops was in the morning when we came in and found our reactive dog parking spot had become a Park and Ride over night. But our competitors and volunteers worked it out and it was an almost seamless transition. It was a fun day. The weather was nice and people were able to visit and mingle in our large parking lot. We got a lot of kudos throughout the day and after the event.
We are hosting another ORT on Sunday, March 6, 2016.”
